GIMP shop alternative to PhotoShop

GIMPshop is a modification of the open source GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.

It shares all GIMP's advantages, including the long feature list and customisability, while addressing some common criticisms regarding the program's interface: GIMPshop modifies the menu structure to closely match Photoshop's, adjusts the program's terminology to match Adobe's, and, in the Windows version, uses a plugin called 'Deweirdifier' to combine the application's numerous windows in a similar manner to the MDI system used by most Windows graphics packages. While GIMPshop does not support Photoshop plugins, all GIMP's own plugins, filters, brushes, etc. remain available.

Due to the changes to the interface, many Photoshop tutorials can be followed in GIMPshop unchanged, and most others can be adapted for GIMPshop users with minimal effort.

Additional functionality comes from an extensive array of plug-ins, ensuring that Audacity can now confidently stand on its own against Soundbooth.

Synfig Studio – alternative to Adobe Flash

Once you get past the setup, however, Synfig is a powerful 2D vector-based animation programme for those who want to create Flash animations for free. It's neither easier nor harder to use than Flash, but--also like Flash--it requires some diligent study before you can begin using the toolbox effectively. To help you get there, there's a huge volume of documentation and tutorials available at the Synfig Web site. cousin can do, at least as far as animation goes. Features include spatial and temporal resolution independence, pen tablet-sensitive tools, path-based gradients, layering, and an interface that's modular, allowing you to maximize screen real estate. It would be nice to see some more shape tools in future versions, but for a free animator that doesn't devour your system resources, Synfig is absolutely worth trying.

Scribus – alternative Adobe InDesign & MS Publisher

Scribus is an open-source program that brings award-winning professional page layout to Linux/Unix, MacOS X, OS/2 and Windows desktops with a combination of "press-ready" output and new approaches to page layout. Underneath the modern and user friendly interface, Scribus supports professional publishing features, such as CMYK color, separations, ICC color management and versatile PDF creation.

The detailed Web site includes a wealth of documentation, tutorials (some with video), and notes on everything from installation problems to drawing a grid to creating a text frame. We found it an invaluable resource when testing the application. There wasn't much jazz to the interface, but all the major beats were present: buttons were laid out logically and grouped according to function, without any unusual placement.

Scribus does have some oddities, mostly related to the scaling of imported images, but there's something else about it that's far more interesting: it painlessly brings in documents from the OpenOffice.org suite and it uses The GIMP for image editing. By taking advantage of these other freeware apps to boost its own productivity, Scribus enhances its appeal by forming a virtual freeware suite. We highly recommend this app to anyone who needs the power of expensive tools but can't afford them.

Jahshaka – Adobe AfterEffects alternative

We think Adobe AfterEffects soon will get some serious competition from Jahshaka, although the app certainly isn't there yet. Its producers announce proudly that Jahshaka's the first open-source video editor, which is an impressive statement to make given how much freeware is floating around out there. It runs using OpenGL, so make sure that you've installed that runtime environment before you run it.

One of Jahshaka's most important and useful features is encoding support for audio (OGG, MP2, MP3 and WAV) and video (AVI, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, DV, MP4 and MOV). There's playback support for a range of audio and video formats that seems to cover nearly everything imaginable. There's also a frame-by-frame paint over function, cross-platform portability, customisable zoom functions, auto save and recovery, an animation component that looks like it can compete comfortably with Flash, and so many more features that if we listed them all, there'd have to be some payola involved. (Trust us, there isn't.)

Jahshaka also comes with a cross-platform multimedia player (the Jahplayer) that is designed to work on Nokia mobile phones as well as your laptop and desktop machines.

Aptana – Adobe GoLive alternative

The Aptana IDE is an open source integrated development environment (IDE) for building JavaScript intensive web applications. It includes coding assistance for JavaScript, HTML, and CSS languages, an outliner of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS code structure, error and warning notification and the possibility to customize and extend the UI.
